Historic Salem, Inc.’s mission is to ensure that the
historic resources of Salem, Massachusetts, which are the
key to its identity, quality of life, and economic vitality,
are preserved for future generations and that
new development complements the historic character of the city.
The preservation issues and potential threats to historic resources are those that Historic Salem believes will have the greatest impact on the City’s historic resources in the upcoming year.

Preservation of Existing Properties
“Ensure that the historic resources of Salem…are preserved for future generations” – HSI Mission Statement
- Most Endangered Historic Properties: All properties on Historic Salem’s Most Endangered Historic Resources List are followed throughout the year and action is taken in response to new threats or opportunities as they arise.
- Bridge St. Historic Urban Entrance Corridor: A “Most Endangered” resource. Recent planning activity and physical changes in the Bridge Street Neighborhood, including planned improvements to Bridge Street by MassHighway and several city planning projects, will generate a lot of activity in this corridor in the upcoming years.
- Burial Grounds: A “Most Endangered” resource. Many of the city’s historic burial grounds are in need of substantial repair and maintenance. HSI will pursue options for community action on behalf of these properties.
- The Courthouse Project: Impacting “Most Endangered” resources. New Construction, Re-use of the Registry, Superior Court & District Court buildings, & impact on neighboring historic resources.
- St. Josephs Church: A “Most Endangered” resource. This project is currently undergoing federal Section 106 review. HSI is a consulting party in this process.
- St. Mary’s Italian Church: A “Most Endangered” resource. The future of St. Mary’s church is undetermined. HSI is tracking potential changes and future uses of the building.
- Salem Common Fence: A “Most Endangered” resource. The City of Salem has promised funds over the next two years to repair portions of the Salem Common Fence. HSI will work with the city and neighborhood in a support capacity to ensure the most effective use of this money. Concern is also growing over the condition of the wooden arch.
