MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to ensure that the historic resources of Salem, Massachusetts, which are the key to its identity, its quality of life, and its economic vitality, are preserved for future generations and that new development complements the historic character of the city.
OUR HISTORY
For over 80 years, Historic Salem, Inc. (HSI) has championed the preservation of Salem’s architecture and history, serving as both an essential community resource and a trusted advocate. Founded in 1944 to save the 17th-century Jonathan Corwin House (the Witch House) from demolition, HSI quickly became a driving force in local preservation. The organization helped establish Salem’s first Local Historic Districts, nominated numerous landmarks to the National Register of Historic Places, and played a direct role in saving historic buildings such as the Wendt House (1783) and the Samuel Pope House (1740)—a rare survivor of Salem’s early Quaker community.
Today, HSI continues to lead the effort to protect and celebrate the city’s architectural legacy. As a non-profit advocacy organization, HSI works to ensure that change in Salem respects the past while supporting a livable, vibrant future. We engage in civic design reviews, provide research and resources through our House Histories and Plaques Program, present annual Preservation Awards, and produce educational events like Christmas in Salem, one of the nation’s oldest holiday house tours. Through collaboration, research, and community outreach, HSI connects residents, city officials, and preservation partners to safeguard the buildings and stories that define Salem.
